APRIL 2005April's European Car is a special issue devoted to project cars. Project cars are generally one of a kind vehicles designed to demonstrate the utmost capabilities of the manufacturer building them.
European Car has chosen nine exceptional vehicles for this feature, two of which were built by CEC suppliers, TechArt for Porsche and AC Schnitzer for BMW/ MINI Cooper.
Shown on the cover, TechArt's 646hp GT Street S Supercar was driven in Germany by European Car writer Nick Hall. In 2003, TechArt's amazing GT Street S attained the overall win of the SportAuto TunerGP at the Hockenheim Ring. It set a lap record of 1.09:07 in 2003, beating 2002's time by over 1/2 second,
Nick Hall says, "It's the in-gear acceleration that is truly awesome. It hits 187mph in 22.9 sec..."
AC Schnitzer's project car the Topster was originally a 2003 Z4. Now it has a hard top and a V8 that boasts 450 hp. To accommodate the 10” x 20” rear Type IV Racing wheels, AC Schnitzer significantly widened the rear.
European Car's Rob Hallstrom drove the Topster in LA with AC Schnitzer test driver Manfred Wollgarten. He wrote, "the driving dynamics are nothing short of spectacular." The admiring stares they received prompted him to add, "one would have thought the car was piloted by a gorgeous movie star."
